Katy Perry is right. If you’re going to do a tights-as-pants look, there’s no excuse not to fully commit. Why not up the ante and make the tights both pants and shoes, the skip the top altogether in favor of a wildly weather inappropriate fur coat? Which is exactly what the Teenage Dream singer did to attend the Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week on June 26.
Perry’s all-black look seemed equally inspired by The Matrix and the mob-wife aesthetic, thanks to her ankle-length fur coat, which she wore with the collar popped high behind her ears and the lapels open to reveal lots of abs and a bit of sideboob underneath. She paired this coat with a ripped semisheer pair of Balenciaga’s stocking pantaleggings, rolled at the hips for a low-rise fit.
To match the severity of the outfit, the former American Idol judge skipped jewelry altogether and wore her hair in a slicked-back bun. Her only accessory was a pair of black sunglasses. But then again, with a look this striking, she doesn’t really need bling.
The intimidating ensemble is a giant tonal shift from what Katy Perry wore just one day previously. On June 25, Perry wore a bright-red single-sleeve minidress with 500- or 600-foot train embellished with the lyrics to her upcoming single, “Woman’s World.” The day before that, she wore an enormous black leather gown by designer Noir Kei Ninomiya that was more cutouts than leather, and adorned with dozens of ruched floral pieces on the voluminous skirt.
But if we’ve learned anything over the years from the woman who made whipped cream bras cool again, it’s that you can never, ever predict what Katy Perry is going to wear from one day to the next.
