Carrie Underwood is returning to her roots. No, not the Southern ones. Her American Idol roots.

You may remember that Carrie Underwood began on American Idol as a contestant back in season 4 in 2005. Or maybe you don’t. It was a while ago. In any case, she is now returning to the Idol family, this time as a judge.

Underwood will join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan on the American Idol judges panel in the upcoming 2025 season. The country star will be taking over for Katy Perry, who announced her departure from the show in February, per People.

“As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, [Underwood] brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows of television,” stated Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, in a press release. “This is a full-circle moment both for the show and for audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home Carrie.”

Carrie Underwood is one of American Idol‘s biggest success stories, second perhaps only to Kelly Clarkson, who won the show’s first season.
