I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but summer’s almost over. I present as evidence: Dakota Johnson wearing a Penny Lane-style camel coat over the weekend in Los Angeles, where she was enjoying a night out with friends.
Like Punxsutawney Phil, Johnson is something like the harbinger of autumn. We wait not for the 34-year-old to see her shadow, but for her sartorial signal that summer is drawing to an end, and a knee-length coat with a fur-trim collar is as good a sign as any that it’s time to wring the last few drops of fun out of the summer days we have left. Fall is coming.
Johnson paired her coat—the ultimate “I’m dating a rockstar” statement piece—with impeccably tailored blue jeans that kissed the ground as she paraded in her razor-thin flats. However, at the time the photo was taken, the actor was on a hike—normcore workout clothes and all. I don’t know about you, but a hike seems like an amazing place to lose a piece of priceless of jewelry. So, yeah, I wouldn’t have worn my ring either, Dakota!

According to the photo agency Backgrid, Johnson wore her fall coat while grabbing a bite to eat following a visit from her longtime pal, Jeremy Allen White. Perhaps the pair were commiserating over the media’s speculation over their respective love lives; or maybe they were going over their must-have pieces for fall. Who knows! Not me. The only certainty here is that autumn is nigh.
