With powerhouse executive producers like Raamla Mohamed, Kerry Washington, and Larry Wilmore behind it, the show has found its stride, in no small part due to the compelling performance of lead actress Emayatzy Corinealdi as Jax Stewart, a corporate defence lawyer deftly handling high-profile cases.
For Monday’s SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations event for ‘Reasonable Doubt’ in Los Angeles, Emayatzy made a stylish appearance that perfectly captured the essence of this summer’s unexpected colour trend: brown. Typically associated with fall, brown has surprisingly dominated summer fashion alongside the ever-classic black, and Emayatzy embraced this trend beautifully in a Tularosa Emma midi dress.
The dress, with its sculpted, vintage-inspired silhouette, served up understated elegance. I love how the bustier top and flared skirt created a clean hourglass shape that felt both timeless and fresh. It’s a look that nods to the past while staying firmly rooted in the present, much like Emayatzy’s portrayal of Jax—a character navigating the complexities of a modern legal landscape with a grounded, yet fierce, approach.
I found myself debating whether the look could have benefited from a statement necklace, perhaps a gold piece to match her shoes and earrings. However, the absence of one may have been a deliberate and smart choice. By resisting the temptation to over style, Emayatzy allowed the dress’ silhouette and the warm, rich brown hue to take center stage. The result was a look that felt effortlessly sophisticated, striking just the right balance between polished and relaxed.
