Vacheron Constantin pay tribute to traditional Chinese storytelling through a new line-up of grail watches.
If you gave up on Duolingo a while back, or you haven’t managed to make it past ‘être’ just yet, then allow us to educate you in the world of all things Métiers d’Art. Literally translated as ‘art professions’ this pocket of artistry celebrates fine craftsmanship and traditional skills, something Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin have long held dear to their horological hearts.
In further contribution to the magic bestowed on a watch touched with Métiers d’Art, Vacheron Constantin adds four limited-edition watches to their line-up that celebrate the intricacies of artistic mastery. Beyond their Swiss origins, the Maison pays a cultural tribute to traditional symbols, in collaboration with the Former Associate Research Librarian of Palace Museum, housed in Beijing’s Forbidden City.
So, what to expect? Well, discover the fusion of art and watchmaking with a nod to the ancient Chinese semiotics, featuring two interpretations of the “Seawater Cliff,” an iconic motif that first appeared in the 14th Century. Through Mr. Song’s guidance, the symbolism on the dial displays the gentle ebb and flow of lashing waves through a sequence of cliffs.
Alluding to Chinese tradition, water and mountains represent a strong territorial presence, such as the unshakeable cliff beyond the waves, offering peace and longevity. A motif found among furniture, sculpture, decorative objects and architecture, the Maison captures the essence of this symbol, in a comforting 39mm case in pink or white gold – chosen for its aesthetic appeal – in both gem set options or otherwise.
With a precedent on the minutiae of detail, turn the watch over and you’ll discover a delicate 22k gold oscillating rotor that mirrors the symbolism of the dial, delicately engraved with a tableau that mimics the movement of the wave and tides. Bestowing a wealth of history and tradition at the wrist, the ornate dial is the product of more than 50 hours of work, and 220 gold wires to shape the motif, followed by layers of enamelling and kiln firing, with no less than 70 hours to create the rich tones encased on the dial.
Proof that history and an homage to the awe-inspiring crafts of yesteryear aren’t just to be found in the annals of a museum, Vacheron Constantin champions ancient storytelling right at your fingertips.
