Lady Gaga made a powerful return to the spotlight at the London premiere of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, held at Cineworld Leicester Square. Once again, she shut down the red carpet with a dramatic, custom Celine by Hedi Slimane strapless gown, leaving a lasting impression that echoed her equally show-stopping appearance at the Venice Film Festival.
While Lady Gaga is no stranger to the colour red, this particular look felt like a bolder statement than ever. The intense red hue of the gown—perfectly complemented by a matching bolero—was elevated by Gaga’s magnetic presence. The gown itself was sleek, but it was the bolero, with its puffed sleeves, that will likely be the dealbreaker.
Some might call the bolero old-fashioned, with its strong ’80s vibes, but Gaga knows exactly how to pull off retro elements with sophistication. If we look back at her Dior ensembles in Venice for the photocall and premiere, which were inspired by the brand’s archives, it becomes clear that this bolero was chosen to add a retro flair that ties into her ongoing stylistic theme for this press tour.
We’ve been wondering whether Lady Gaga would appear as her more subdued self, Stefani Germanotta, or bring her iconic, larger-than-life persona to the ‘Joker’ press tour. In Venice, she gave us both, and she did the same here in London.
The design of the dress reflects Stefani’s understated elegance, while the bold red colour, new red hair, and graphic blue eye makeup scream Harley Quinn. Even though Gaga initially told Vogue that this wouldn’t be a method dressing press tour, it’s clear she’s leaning into her character’s influence—and I, for one, am thrilled she has.
Her look was completed with stunning Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany jewelry, including the iconic Bird on a Rock brooch and a platinum and yellow gold Vigne ring adorned with Fancy Intense Yellow diamonds.
Lady Gaga wasn’t alone in her red carpet triumph. Her fiancé, Michael Polansky, joined her looking equally sharp in a classic Celine Homme tuxedo. Their coordinated appearance was the perfect counterpart to Gaga’s dramatic look, and the subtle chemistry between the two added a personal, grounded touch to an otherwise larger-than-life moment.
For me, this premiere look continues to cement her status as both a fashion icon and a master of storytelling through style. She’s once again blurred the lines between Stefani Germanotta and her more theatrical Lady Gaga persona, while also paying homage to her character in ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ Whether it’s method dressing or not, she’s bringing her A-game, and the red carpet is all the better for it.
