Greta Gerwig Wore Chanel Haute Couture To The Pioneers Foundation's Pioneer Dinner

The Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation’s Pioneer Dinner honoured Greta Gerwig on Wednesday night at The Beverly Hilton, and she embraced a timeless style that perfectly complemented the gravity of the event.

Since Virginie Viard’s departure, Chanel has leaned into its rich archives for red carpet inspiration, and Greta’s custom look exemplified the best of this new direction.

For the occasion, Chanel crafted a black tweed dress inspired by Look 1 from the Chanel Fall 2022 Haute Couture collection, featuring intricate braids and embellished jewelled buttons. Given the runway version was a green skirt suit—a vision that I simply cannot imagine on Greta—Chanel’s adaptation into a more classic dress was a masterstroke. It exudes sophistication while playing into Greta’s signature minimalist aesthetic, perfectly fitting the mood of the evening.

The choice of black tweed struck an excellent balance between classic Chanel heritage and a modern take on red carpet elegance. This dress spoke volumes without shouting, fitting the understated confidence Greta carries. It’s a design that isn’t just appropriate but truly honours her as the honouree, showing a thoughtful connection between her personality and the event’s significance.

Finishing the look with Chanel shoes and their High Jewelry, including the Comète jewelry watch, added the right amount of sparkle without overwhelming the ensemble. This was a look of elegance and substance—a fitting tribute to a trailblazing director who continues to leave her mark on cinema.
