Still on fire from her ‘Mañana Será Bonito’ tour, Karol G lit up the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she was nominated for Best Latin for ‘Mi Ex Tenía Razón’ and delivered a fiery performance of ‘Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.’
Like Sabrina Carpenter, Karol G dipped into the archives, choosing a Veronique Leroy Spring/Summer 1996 fire-print collared dress. It’s an intriguing concept—a dress that burns with nostalgia, as MTV itself was at the height of its influence in the ‘90s. The fiery motif paired with the white collar gave off a quirky, rebellious vibe that feels right at home on the VMAs red carpet, where bold statements are celebrated.
However, while the dress worked on a conceptual level, the styling left something to be desired. The platinum blonde hair Karol G has been sporting lately felt mismatched with this look. Some might say it matched the vintage ‘90s aesthetic perfectly considering the model on the runway, but I feel that a more natural tone might have suited the fiery print better. Similarly, the choice of red lipstick was too harsh, overpowering the dress rather than complementing it. A softer or warmer shade would have been preferred.
That being said, the PVC yellow mules were a fun touch. They added a playful nod to the offbeat spirit of the ‘90s, injecting a bit of fun into her style statement.
