When ‘Emily in Paris’ first graced our Netflix screens, it was a vibrant, whimsical portrayal of an American navigating Parisian life, with plenty of charm, couture, and clichés. Now, as we delve into the second part of season four, released on September 12, the series has evolved—just like its main character and the actress portraying her, Lily Collins.
If you’ve been a long-time fan of Lily’s red carpet style, you may have noticed her distinct style shift during the promotional tour for this season.
This was evident once again at the photocall in Rome, where Lily posed against the iconic backdrop of the Colosseum. Gone are the flirty floral dresses and playful silhouettes that characterised her early red carpet appearances. Instead, Lily has gone down a more daring route in this Givenchy Fall 2024 edgy black leather draped bustier paired with a matching skirt and leather pumps.
Her look was strikingly different, showcasing a boldness we’ve rarely seen from her before.
It’s clear that this shift in Lily’s style isn’t a coincidence. Since working with stylist Andrew Mukamal, who is known for his avant-garde and unconventional choices, Lily has embraced an edgier aesthetic. Whether this shift is for the better depends on your perspective. If you loved the whimsical, romanticised looks she often wore earlier in her career, you might feel disconnected from this new direction. However, this change makes sense in the context of both Lily’s personal growth and her on-screen evolution.
However, not everyone will embrace this transformation. There’s something about Lily’s earlier style—a nostalgic whimsy that perfectly aligned with the series’ original tone—that many fans adored. But as both the show and its star grow, so must their fashion choices. The striking Givenchy look is a powerful statement that signals change, and for better or worse, it’s a reflection of the actress’s willingness to push boundaries.
While some may long for the old Lily, it’s clear that this shift is intentional, calculated, and above all, empowering. Just as Emily is finding her footing, so too is Lily, both on and off-screen. It will be fascinating to see how this evolution continues to unfold in the fashion world and within the series. But one thing is certain: neither ‘Emily in Paris’ nor Lily Collins is afraid to take risks. And that, perhaps, is the most exciting part of all.
