Taylor Swift was the one everyone had their eyes on at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she took home the Video of the Year award for her self-directed ‘Fortnight’ music video. But while her career milestones continue to impress, her red carpet choices have me asking questions.
Let’s start with the positives: Taylor stepped away from her usual Oscar de la Renta prom gowns, which was a much-needed change. This time, she opted for a Dior Resort 2025 printed taffeta bustier and skirt paired with black velvet shorts.
The break from her usual style was appreciated—no one could handle another sweet-but-safe gown from her.
However, this rebellious Dior ensemble felt overstyled to the point of distraction.
The Dior leather cut-out gloves, choker, and the same old hairstyle we’ve seen from her for what feels like forever made the outfit feel cluttered.
With her star power and status as one of the most influential figures in music, you expect more. The potential was there with this look, but the execution fell flat.
Her Stuart Weitzman Ultrastuart Maverick over-the-knee boots added an edgy element, but it wasn’t enough to save the look from feeling like a bit of a missed opportunity.
While I applaud Taylor for stepping out of her usual comfort zone, the overall result felt like a misfire. At this stage in her career, she should be making fashion statements that are as powerful and nuanced as her music. Instead, this look felt like she was trying to do too much without quite getting it right.
