This Fall, Brunette Is The New Blonde - Bangstyle

They’ve always said blondes have more fun, but this fall brunettes are the ones turning heads. Hear what Bangstyle’s CEO, Ashlee, has to say about the turning tides.

If you’re anything like us and you’re doom scrolling all over TikTok before bed, we’re seeing countless instances of blondes saying goodbye to their bleached hair for the fall 2024 season.

Everywhere we look, Influencer after influencer is posting their transformation from blonde to brunette and they look incredible! Blonde will always be a classic (and fun) choice, but the questions stands — is it really “more fun”? Women go blonde for a litany of reasons, but are the reasons we went blonde the same reason why we are ditching it now?

Over the years, a lot of opinions and stigmas have been applied to a women’s hair color. Brunettes “look” smarter, blondes have “more fun” and on it goes. But why is that? Is there any fact to all of this? Or are we made to believe that in order to appeal to someone else’s taste or preference?

Ironically, in 2020, a survey was conducted and according to the majority of both men and women, “the most attractive hair color is brown. This may be because “brunette hair is often psychologically associated with positive attributes such as intelligence, confidence, independence, and competence.” In a poll conducted by Health Digest in 2021, 32% of their readers voted for brunette hair as their favorite hair color, landing the top spot for most attractive hair color among readers. However, women have always been made to feel the opposite, especially when dating.

Films and TV shows have traditionally pegged the brunette as the smart sidekick. Meanwhile the characters that all the men are madly in love with are the breathtaking blondes. Social media influencers are seemingly more blonde than brunette over the years. The supermodels turning heads — blonde. And yet in a massive social content shift, we are starting to see influencers ditch the blonde in favor of rich chocolates and all over dark shades by the dozen.

Not to get too soap boxy (and it might be too late), but in short, I think it has a lot to do with the new wave of de-centering men. Going blonde was catering to the patriarchy. What hair color was going to land you the 6’5” trust fund investment banker? The 4B and single by choice movements are putting the power back into women’s hands to essentially be whomever we want to be without worrying what anyone else thinks of us. If you aren’t trying to make anyone happy but yourself, then you have to actually sort out what makes YOU happy. For so long, we have dressed and looked in ways we feel will be attractive to the male gaze. But for the first time in history, women are starting to ask themselves, “do I like it?” How would I look if it was only for my gaze? And the dogs of course. I know, “what do I like” sounds like a simple question. But it’s not when you’ve never truly asked yourself that.

Coloring your hair blonde is amazing, everyone should do it once. Just like going to Paris or NYC — you just have to experience it. It’s freeing and it is fun. I can tell you from experience of being both blonde and brunette, many times over for each, men do look at you more when you are blonde. You do get more attention. People randomly speak to you, unsolicited, when you have blonde hair and in a more friendly way too. But the question stands, do you actually have more fun? My take, no, I don’t think that’s the case. In fact, I feel like that is just a cliche reinforcing the idea that blondes are vapid and brunettes are too smart to have that much fun. All in all, when women feel safe, beautiful and happy, we are all capable of having fun! No matter what hair color you have.

So back to asking ourselves what do we want. We are also defining who we are in ways more than ever before. Who do I want to be? And knowing that no decision has to be permanent, the world (and hair color) is our vegan oyster! Like gel nails, going back to brunette feels like a break for your hair. A recharge. Taking a break from lifting, lightening and bleaching allows hair to recover from heaving processing, potential damage and breaking. it’s the perfect time to give your hair back everything it’s depleted of with a hair mask designed to reconstruct your hair. Toss it in there before a run. Use it in the shower. Give your hair the “self care” it needs too.
