Tyla Wore Area To The 2024 MTV VMAs

Tyla made a splash at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, not just for picking up the Best Afrobeats award for her hit song ‘Water,’ but for her eye-catching red carpet look.

The singer brought a burst of fluorescent yellow to the event, stepping out in an Area Fall 2024 dress that was as vibrant as it was daring.

The dress, with its fringed details, allowed her green undergarments to peek through, creating a somewhat see-through effect. Some might argue that the contrasting underwear was a misstep and that a yellow undergarment would have been more cohesive. Others might find the fringed details and transparency to be a bold fashion statement that pushes boundaries.

Tyla accessorised with a simple resin turquoise necklace and a pair of pink Rene Caovilla Irina sandals, choices that some might view as mismatched against the striking yellow of her dress. Some may have wished for a more coordinated colour scheme, but I like how the accessories did add a playful touch to the overall ensemble.

For me, the look was a refreshing blast of ‘80s fun vibes. The bright fluorescent colour, combined with the new blonde curls Tyla sported, made for a look that was unapologetically bold and full of character. It was a nod to a flamboyant era, bringing a sense of retro glam to the red carpet in a way that felt both nostalgic and vibrant.

While Tyla’s red carpet look may have been divisive, it’s clear that she’s not afraid to take risks and embrace a playful, bold aesthetic.

I’m just grateful that the risk-taking didn’t extend to the runway gloves.

Fabergé rings completed her look.
