Angelina Jolie returned to the spotlight for the New York screening of her new biopic, ‘Maria’, and the accompanying Q&A session on Sunday following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last month.
While Angelina hasn’t been nominated during awards season since 2009, there’s already chatter of her “soaring into the Oscars race” for her compelling portrayal of the iconic opera singer Maria Callas.
If that buzz turns into reality, you can bet we’ll be there to witness it.
For this occasion, Angelina donned a striking Madame Grès white v-neck dress. It took me a moment to choose the right photo of this ensemble because, in some images, the most crucial detail was lost—the pleats. These pleats are integral to appreciating the genius of Madame Grès, who was one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century and left an indelible mark on the fashion world with her pleated silk designs.
Madame Grès’ legacy lies in her ability to transform silk into a garment that speaks of craftsmanship and artistry. The pleats on Angelina’s dress are a perfect homage to the couturier’s meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the bodice, where the construction is a testament to true haute couture craftsmanship. Her designs were often described as evoking power, strength, and beauty without objectification—a sentiment that resonates deeply with Angelina’s personal style and the persona she embodies.
While Angelina’s dress encapsulated the timeless elegance of Madame Grès, her burgundy Aquazzura Romance sandals were initially a surprising choice for such a classic white gown. However, you could say that the Scarlet Rouge Tom Ford Beauty lip shade tied the entire look together, adding an element of rich drama without overwhelming the ethereal quality of the dress.
Others, like me, are wishing that the dress was full length as we see in the image below.
