As anticipation builds for Sarah Burton’s debut collection at Givenchy, several celebrities opted for vintage Givenchy looks at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, showcasing a range of styles from the label’s iconic archives. While archival fashion can offer timeless appeal, it also carries the risk of looking outdated. The evening saw both successes and a miss, as stars sought to balance history with modern glamour.
A Sheer Miss
Rooney Mara, who often opts for minimalistic black ensembles, took a step outside her comfort zone with a Givenchy Fall 1996 Haute Couture ivory silk chiffon dress. The asymmetrical Empire silhouette, adorned with delicate silk thread Point de Beauvais floral embroidery, offered an ethereal quality. Yet, despite the beauty of the craftsmanship, the dress was way too sheer, bordering on looking more like a vintage nightgown than a red-carpet statement.

Archival Elegance
In contrast, Kaia Gerber excelled in her archival Givenchy moment. Wearing a striking black silk chiffon Empire gown from the Fall 1997 Haute Couture collection, her look was embroidered with jet-black beads and fringes in floral motifs. Kaia’s gown exuded a sense of understated drama, a modern interpretation of vintage glamour that did not feel overly nostalgic. The dress highlighted her statuesque beauty, capturing the essence of haute couture without appearing dated.
Polished and Refined
Joaquin Phoenix, known for his relaxed, sometimes dishevelled style, made a surprising shift with his Givenchy tuxedo. Usually seen in a well-worn Stella McCartney suit, Joaquin looked polished and refreshingly refined. This polished transformation was a welcome change and showed how a classic tuxedo can bring out a star’s innate charm.
