Lady Gaga made a guest appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on Tuesday, where she promoted her new film ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ as well as its companion album, ‘Harlequin’. Known for her bold and transformative fashion choices, Gaga’s latest look was no exception.
Upon first glance, it’s clear that Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is no longer a part of this press tour, and her fearless alter ego – Lady Gaga – has taken the lead, particularly since Venice Film Festival.
The singer-actress wore a custom Muto Little dress, which was unmistakably inspired by the title of her album, ‘Harlequin’, and the iconic harlequin costume itself. Complete with collar ruffles and triangle fabric appliqués, the dress was an ode to the classic character, reimagined in true Gaga fashion.
Now, I know what some of you may be thinking—one person specifically, that she looks like a clown. And while it’s true that the harlequin character eventually evolved into the clown archetype, Gaga managed to put her own signature twist on it. Her commitment to the theme is admirable, but I can’t help but admit that the entire look evokes a certain horror movie vibe, which is oddly fitting given Halloween is just around the corner. Gaga completed her mildly unsettling ensemble with white tights and Madomorpho pointe pumps, further embracing the eerie aesthetic.
As much as I appreciate her dedication to theatrics, I personally preferred the hauntingly beautiful nature of her Dilara Fındıkoğlu dress for her performance. The tulle and silk cold-shoulder ruffled dress, with its deconstructed corset style, perfectly captured the melancholy mood of her song ‘Happy Mistakes.’ Gaga described the song as “a lonely disposition, portraits of a strung-out girl,” which she said is a summary of her career—a narrative much more fitting than the exaggerated harlequin homage.
