Rachel Zegler attended the Variety The New York Party as the cover star of their latest issue, where she talked about reinventing Snow White and taking the stage as Juliet in director Sam Gold’s revival of Shakespeare’s best-known romance.
The styling of this Dior Pre-Fall 2024 dress didn’t work for me.
On the runway, this black embroidered Dior dress was a standout. With the black layer and boots that gave it a bit of edge, it struck the perfect balance between classic elegance and modern rebelliousness. The original styling felt fresh, youthful and exciting.
Unfortunately, Rachel’s interpretation of the look didn’t live up to its potential. She opted to style the dress with a bra and high-waisted pants, which immediately diminished the impact for me. What once had an air of edgy sophistication now fell into predictable territory. The stripped-back styling lost the layering that gave the runway version its charm, making the look feel less like a moment and more like something we’ve seen too many times before.
It’s possible the decision to remove the black layer was an attempt to avoid the dress feeling too formal or gown-like. But by doing so, Rachel’s version of the dress lacked the edge that made the original so compelling.
