Tyla hit the red carpet at the 2024 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Brooklyn, just before performing her hit song ‘Water’ and her new track ‘Push 2 Start.’ While her performance undoubtedly wowed the crowd, her red carpet look left me with more questions than admiration. Mainly: Is Tina Knowles styling Tyla? Because every recent appearance feels like a flashback to Destiny’s Child circa 2009, House of Deréon-era fashion.
Don’t get me wrong—Tyla is a stunning young woman, and she has the body to pull off daring looks. So, I have no issue with her showing off her figure, especially at an event like the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where sexy, confident fashion reigns supreme. But this Salih Balta dress? It’s essentially strips of fabric held together with strings, giving serious Y2K vibes that feel outdated, not nostalgic.
If this dress were worn by Beyoncé at the height of Destiny’s Child, maybe it would’ve worked. But in 2024, it reads dated. Tyla’s got all the potential to be a real style icon, yet the outfit choices like this one make her look stuck in a fashion time warp.
Tyla desperately needs a new stylist or at least a fresh perspective that embraces the fashion of today rather than leaning so heavily into early 2000s aesthetics. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of throwback fashion, but this look was more a reminder of why some trends should stay in the past. Even her Rene Caovilla sandals, while elegant, did little to elevate what felt like an uninspired, dated ensemble. Let’s hope her next red carpet appearance brings something more modern and fitting for the star she’s becoming.
