Leave it to Cynthia Erivo to bring the theatrical drama to the Mexico City premiere of ‘Wicked’, where she captured the essence of Elphaba without resorting to the iconic green hue. This time, with the yellow brick road as the backdrop, the British actress was mesmerising wearing a custom Thom Browne Couture dress that expertly combined the fantastical with haute couture.
The strapless black sparkling dress, adorned with intricate multi-coloured black, silver, and emerald crystal, cut bead, and sequin embroidery, was a dazzling display of craftsmanship. The exaggerated hip, which could have been the most dramatic part of the look on its own, added a structured flair. But it was the black silk moiré cropped hooded jacket that truly brought this ensemble to life, infusing the look with the spirit of Elphaba. The sculptural witch hands, with black and emerald crystal-tipped nails, echoed the essence of the character in a way that felt both whimsical and powerful.
Some may find the second pair of hands a step too far, with some likely arguing that it veered too much into costume territory. But for me, the hands were an integral part of the look, enhancing its visual impact while evoking the dark enchantment and mystique of Elphaba. Rather than detracting from the outfit, they added an extra layer of drama, making the look feel alive with a theatrical energy.
For me, this was a stunning visual combining fashion with storytelling.
