For those keeping track, Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Wicked’ press tour has seen her present her signature avant-garde elegance. While her previous appearances leaned into bold fashion statements, her look at the New York premiere—hosted by Anna Wintour at the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday—was more understated.
Following her chic all-black ensemble on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, the British actress stepped out in yet another noir look—this time courtesy of Dior, with a three-piece combination of a black knit top, corset, and silk ball skirt.
If her Mexico City premiere look felt like a touch too much for some, this pared-down approach could easily sway you. To me, though, this feels like a continued upward trajectory since her Sydney appearance, even if it does feel like a slightly subdued take on her typically daring aesthetic. Cynthia’s look was completed with a veiled headpiece by Stephen Jones, adding an air of mystique but stopping short of the theatricality that some might crave from her.
It’s polished. It’s elegant. But is it the standout moment we’ve been waiting for? Perhaps not quite yet. I have a feeling that Cynthia is saving the best for her London homecoming premiere on Monday night, where expectations for an unforgettable look for me are at an all-time high.
Here in New York, she’s making an impression, but it’s one that feels intentionally restrained. While this look might not satisfy those looking for full drama, there’s no doubt she’s still turning heads—just in her own, deliberately restrained way.
A Mikimoto pearl necklace and custom Melissa Kaye Stella earrings complete her look. The the design’s original diamond drops were replaced with emeralds as an homage to her character Elphaba.
