Katherine Waterston’s red carpet style rarely veers off the noir path, so imagine my surprise when she attended ‘The Agency’ New York premiere on Thursday in the colour of the week: red.
For someone who spends about 80% of her red carpet moments in black, this red Patou Spring 2025 strapless tulip-shaped dress feels like a refreshing departure. It’s always exciting to see celebrities step out of their comfort zones, and Katherine’s choice of this bold, sculptural design is certainly one way to do it.
But as much as I want to celebrate this sartorial shift, it would be impossible to overlook the dress’ length. The dress is just too long for her. With a silhouette as distinct as this tulip-shaped design, precision is everything. The elongated length throws off the proportions and has a noticeable knock-on effect on the bodice. Those clean, architectural lines we admired on the runway are, unfortunately, lost here.
And if you’re experiencing déjà vu, you’re not alone. Eve Hewson already gave us a preview of this look back in September at ‘The Perfect Couple’ LA premiere, opting for the pink version straight off the runway. While Eve’s take was pretty much perfect, Katherine’s rendition leaves me longing for the original crispness that made this design a standout.
Still, credit where it’s due: Katherine stepping into vibrant red is a statement in itself, and it’s a bold move that shows her willingness to experiment beyond her usual aesthetic, even if the execution may have missed the mark this time.
