It appears to be nostalgia night at the 2024 MTV EMAs with Tyla setting the pace, and British TV presenter Maya Jama following suit in this Versace look oozing ‘90s allure.
Maya’s choice, a vintage Versace Spring 1994 black dress accented with medusa safety pins from Studded Petals Vintage, which was an undeniable nod to Liz Hurley’s legendary safety-pin dress at the 1994 ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ premiere.
Though Maya’s dress featured fewer pins and a subtler approach, the Versace homage was clear. The bold look instantly evoked that unforgettable moment Liz shared alongside Hugh Grant—although Maya’s adaptation may not carry quite the same impact. There’s a timeless charm in vintage Versace, and Maya did justice to the aesthetic, but it raises an interesting question: how close is too close when paying homage to a style icon?
For some, this may be a perfect homage, celebrating a definitive moment in fashion history. For others, the look might feel too spotlight-seeking, particularly when that spotlight has been attached to a specific red carpet memory for decades.
Yet Maya’s choice to go with a more subdued pin placements gives the look a unique twist—keeping it familiar but refreshed.
