The MTV Europe Music Awards may have drifted off the fashion radar in recent years, but South African singer Tyla’s appearance on tonight’s red carpet at Co-op Live in Manchester caught my eye, drawing attention back to the event in a big way.
Tyla stepped out in a vintage Roberto Cavalli Fall 2000 blue and black satin chiffon zebra-print gown, featuring a cowl neck, high-leg slit, and fur-trimmed hem. If this dress looks familiar, it’s because it’s the same design—albeit in a different colour—that Aaliyah famously wore at the 2000 VMAs while winning Best Female Music Video of the Year, while Eve wore the same dress to the 2000 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards,
Whether Tyla’s choice was a direct homage to Aaliyah, especially as she’s likely up for an EMA herself tonight, or if it simply follows her recent penchant for vintage and archival pieces, one thing is certain: this is a clear step up from her look at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Tyla is showing her fashion chops with this classic yet daring throwback, reminding us of the timeless allure of early 2000s Roberto Cavalli designs.
To complete the look, she paired the gown with Paris Texas Uma knee-high cut-out sandals and a selection of silver jewels, tying together a cohesive, high-impact ensemble that feels refreshingly nostalgic.
For a red carpet that’s been on the decline, Tyla’s fashion tribute injects a needed dose of excitement, reviving the EMAs while breathing new life into this iconic Roberto Cavalli design.
