Here’s a breakdown of the rest of the notable looks from Monday night’s 2024 Gotham Awards in New York City.
Throwing in the towel on expectation
Angelina Jolie in a black scarf-like dress has officially lowered my hopes for awards season. It lacked any interest you’d expect from such an iconic star. The design felt uninspired, leaving me craving more from someone who usually delivers. This look was a missed opportunity for the start of awards season.
Gold perfection
After her Gucci ensemble, Aubrey Plaza shone bright in a Fendi Fall 2023 Couture gold knit off-the-shoulder gown. The crystal and paillette appliqué details were exquisite, elevating her to one of the best-dressed of the evening. This was glamorous, refined, and completely in line with the Aubrey we love. Fendi and Aubrey proved to be a winning combination.
Just OK
Chloe Sevigny’s Saint Laurent ruffled dress wasn’t groundbreaking but was far superior to some of her previous choices this year. The romantic undertones suited her offbeat aesthetic, making it work for her, but quite not for the evening.
A letdown
Jessica Chastain’s white Gucci ribbed halter dress left much to be desired. The gold halter neckline was the only redeeming factor in an otherwise lackluster design. This felt like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.
Purple Reign
Kiki Layne dazzled in a Pamella Roland Fall 2024 gown featuring sequins and pink pearl details around the neckline. The rich purple tone was striking against her skin. It was elegant, flattering, and beautifully styled. A solid win for Kiki.
Too fussy
Mikey Madison in Schiaparelli Fall 2024 Haute Couture didn’t quite hit the mark. The look felt like it overwhelmed her, as I feel this look needed someone with more height to pull it off. The modified bra was a small win.
Unnecessary sleeves alert
Monica Barbaro’s Rodarte Spring 2025 lace dress could have been a standout if not for the flared sleeves. They felt excessive and detracted from the overall look. Simplified, this could’ve been a hit. As it stands, it’s just okay.
Spring In Winter
Rachel Brosnahan’s forest green Erdem gown from Spring 2025 embraced seasonal wintery tones with a touch of sheer elegance. The contrast between the sheer bodice and full skirt created visual intrigue, while the wintery palette added depth.
Couture newcomer with promise
Ryan Destiny made her mark in a Fendi Couture camel turtleneck ribbed knit gown with an intricate knot wrap bra top. While the style has been seen before, notably on Zendaya, this hue brought a freshness to it. It’s a confident start to awards season. Let’s hope she keeps this momentum going.
A rose-tinted evolution
Zoe Kravitz stayed true to her Saint Laurent roots, but this ruched rose pink dress was a delightful departure. The subtle colour shift to rose-pink elevated her signature aesthetic. It’s easily one of her best looks in recent memory. A welcome change.
Do stripes and polka dots work? Yes. Kinda
Zoey Deutch made a compelling case for clashing prints in her Chanel Fall 2022 Haute Couture silk jacquard dress and embroidered bolero. Stripes and polka dots shouldn’t work, but somehow, on Zoey, they did. She pulled this off with charm and ease. Another win for Zoey.
