Jennifer Lopez attended the special screening of ‘Unstoppable’ at CAA on Sunday in Los Angeles, serving up a pale blue ensemble that featured a velvet-trimmed blazer from Gucci’s Spring 2017 collection. She paired it with a pussy bow blouse, clearly aiming to channel Alessandro Michele’s signature ’70s-inspired aesthetic from his time at Gucci.
But despite nods to Michele’s celebrated era at the Italian fashion house, this outfit fell flat for me. It doesn’t feel nostalgic in a charming way—it feels dated.
Where this look really loses me is the low-rise jeans. They’re unflattering, and serve as a reminder of why I never embraced this trend in the first place. Low-rise jeans should have stayed in the 90s where they belonged, alongside inflatable furniture.
I will always appreciate Jennifer’s attempt to do something different and unexpected, the execution misses the mark. The blazer and blouse might have worked better with a different base—high-waisted trousers, perhaps. Instead, the low-rise denim drags the entire outfit down.
Sometimes, it’s best to leave certain styles in the past.
