Ayo Edebiri was among the stars who graced W Magazine’s Annual Best Performances Party at Chateau Marmont ahead of the Golden Globes. While her custom Loewe suit sparked divided opinions—some loved the tailoring but weren’t sold on the patch, others admired how she sold the look, Julia Roberts references and all, and if you’re anything like me, you needed the social media photoshoot to be convinced.
On this occasion Ayo turned to Commes des Garçons, pulling the standout purple sequin dress from the brand’s Fall 2012 collection. Drawing from a collection that celebrated Rei Kawakubo’s exploration of “flatness” with exaggerated silhouettes, volume, and dimension, the dress transformed into a sparkling ode to avant-garde design.
The oversized silhouette, intentionally bold and unconventional, could have easily overwhelmed someone less confident, but Ayo carried it effortlessly. The shimmering purple sequins and structured shape brought a playful yet elevated energy to the evening, perfectly aligned with Kawakubo’s signature vision.
Ayo completed the look with a retro-inspired flip-up bob straight out of the ‘60s—a hairstyle experiencing a deserved resurgence. This nod to vintage glamour added depth and a touch of nostalgia to her thoroughly modern ensemble.
