Recreations on the red carpet always pique our interest, and Elle Fanning has delivered the first of awards season at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards, taking a leaf from our 2024 awards season queen, Carey Mulligan.
Elle’s custom Balmain ball gown, crafted from draped satin with a beaded animal-print molded bustier, pays homage to the iconic Pierre Balmain Haute Couture Fall/Winter 1953 “reversed champagne flute” gown. It’s a bold choice that perfectly encapsulates the glamour and artistry of haute couture history.
I adore how the A Complete Unknown actress stayed true to the original vision. Her look is elevated by clear, effortless styling, including a reverse Cartier choker that feels both modern and timeless. The elegant updo further enhances the gown’s vintage aesthetic, allowing the intricate detailing of the dress to take center stage.
Initially, I found myself wishing the tone of gold on the animal-print bustier matched her Cartier gold jewels for a more cohesive finish. However, upon reflection, the contrast adds a layer of depth and visual intrigue. The warmer gold of the bustier creates a captivating juxtaposition against her cooler-toned jewelry, making the entire look more dynamic.
Elle’s dedication to honouring a piece of fashion history while making it feel fresh and personal is commendable.
