Monica Barbaro brought pure sophistication to the London premiere of A Complete Unknown at the BFI Southbank this evening, reviving the hooded dress trend with aplomb. While Elle Fanning has been channelling menswear-inspired looks during this press tour, Monica has remained the reigning queen of unadulterated glamour. Tonight was no exception, as she dazzled in a Schiaparelli Spring 2024 Haute Couture gown.
When it comes to Schiaparelli, we often expect eccentricity or avant-garde details, but this black silk satin gown proved that simplicity can be equally captivating. The deep, vertiginous neckline framed Monica’s effortless sensuality, enhanced by her artful, S-shaped pose, which made the dress even more striking.
Of course, this is Schiaparelli, so the gown wasn’t entirely without detail. The black jersey hood—a key feature of the design—was anchored by rhinestone-jeweled buckles on the straps, featuring the house’s iconic Keyhole motif. These subtle embellishments added just the right amount of intrigue to balance the minimalist silhouette.
While I can picture Jodie Turner-Smith reimagining this look with Swarovski crystal retrofuturistic earrings to amp up the drama, Monica’s minimalist approach worked beautifully here. Her diamond studs were understated yet elegant, perfectly complementing the gown’s streamlined aesthetic.
Monica’s commitment to glamour this press tour is admirable, and this Schiaparelli moment proves she knows exactly how to own a trend while keeping it timeless. Hooded gowns may have had their heyday, but in Monica’s capable hands, they feel utterly fresh and modern.
