Buttoned Up in Patrick Kelly
Leave it to Beyonce to give us a fashion history lesson while looking flawless. The singer wore a vintage 1980s Patrick Kelly black mini dress adorned with a trompe-l’œil gold-button bustier.
With February being Black History Month in the US, this sartorial nod felt especially significant. Patrick Kelly was the first African-American designer to become a member of the prestigious Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter in Paris. His signature use of colourful buttons—a playful homage to his grandmother’s resourceful mending techniques—earned him the title Fashion King of Buttons.
Beyonce’s dress was a sleek and timeless representation of Kelly’s legacy. The minimalist styling let the gold buttons shine, while her signature blonde waves gave the look a modern edge.
