Cynthia Erivo Wore Givenchy Haute Couture To The Academy Awards Nominees Dinner

To say you weren’t fans of Cynthia Erivo’s Tin Man meets the Cowardly Lion Givenchy archive pull at the SAG Awards would be an understatement. But undeterred, she went back into the Givenchy vault for the Academy Awards Nominees Dinner, this time selecting a golden long coat from the Givenchy Spring 1998 Haute Couture collection.

Designed by Alexander McQueen as part of The Japanese Garden collection, the coat—richly embroidered with peacock and butterfly motifs—was layered over a matching golden midi dress.

There’s no denying the sheer drama of this piece—the embroidery is stunning, and the poetic tie-in of the peacock and butterfly motifs is a thoughtful touch. The butterfly, often symbolising change and freedom, aligns beautifully with the themes of Wicked. But my immediate thought? This needed someone taller.

Cynthia attempted to compensate with towering Christian Louboutin triple-stacked green platforms, which Elphabafied the look even further. I see the vision, but I’m not sold on this shade of green. It kind of validates my gut feeling that the proportions aren’t quite working.

That said, the golden hue is gorgeous on her, and the individual pieces are undeniably beautiful—I’m just about 70% sold on the execution.

With the same manicure from the SAG Awards and her signature opulent jewels, Cynthia certainly committed to the look. But did it fully deliver? What do you think?
