First-time nominee Mikey Madison made her Academy Awards Nominee Dinner debut in LA on Tuesday, and, much like fellow newbie Ariana Grande, she reached for an archive look.
Madison opted for a Bill Blass Fall 1987 ready-to-wear deep blue silk and black velvet strapless dress, complete with back bustle and bows from Shrimpton Couture. I know you will have a lot to say about this, so in pre-empting some of your likely comments, let’s unpack this one.
- The Dress Doesn’t Do Much for Her: It’s undeniable that this dress is stunning, but the lighting just wasn’t her friend. While the black-and-white runway image shows the intricate details, the dress is a bit lost under the dimmed lights at this event.
- Overwhelmed by Fabric: It’s easy to argue that the dress swallows her whole—until you peek at that runway shot again. The dress has a gorgeous train cascading from the bustle and bows, but without that extra light, it gives off a swallowed whole vibe.
- The Glam Is Too Simple: Mikey’s signature beauty look is, well, simple. And while I’d agree that she could have done more in this department, this is her signature look, which is why the SAG Awards red lip was such a big deal.
- The Back is Everything: Let’s be real—Mikey’s back view is the winner here. That back is everything and gives the whole look a dose of elegance.
To complete her look, Mikey added Tiffany & Co. platinum diamond earrings, a Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany ring, and black Aquazzura Divine sandals.
