Free People Extratropical Maxi Dress

Just because you’ve got a bump doesn’t mean you’re sentenced to eight months of stretchy pants and oversized T-shirt dresses (no shade). When I booked a beach vacation to Puerto Rico while pregnant, I was fully ready to channel Rihanna’s iconic pregnancy style—not disappear behind basics. Free People came through with all the good stuff: smocked spring dresses, comfy (but cute!) walking sandals, bump-friendly swimsuits, and breezy linen sets that had me feeling chic. Whether I was toes-in-the-sand or playing tourist in the city, I felt stylish, and yes—my bump was absolutely the main character.

1. Smocking

While searching for vacation fits, smocked detailing was high on my list. It’s stretchy, breathable, and adapts beautifully to a growing chest and belly, offering shape and gentle support without feeling restrictive. It’s one of those rare design details that’s both functional and flattering. I instantly fell for this maxi dress and its bohemian vibe—a key fashion trend this season. The low-cut back and delicate straps add just the right amount of sexy, making it anything but boring. I wore it for a full day of exploring the city and felt cool (literally), and totally put-together.

2. Linen Sets

A Linen set was a must-have on my list the moment I found out I’d be pregnant through spring and summer. This one’s lightweight, breathable and effortless. I particularly love this set because of the open-front top that lets me show off the bump in a bold, beautiful way (thank you for the confidence boost, Riri). The matching linen pants, complete with a stretchy waistband, make the whole look feel easy, breezy, and totally bump-approved. I finished it off with a shell necklace because I’m fully embracing the coastal cool accessory trend. Minimal effort, maximum chic energy.

3. A-Line Skirts

There are so many reasons an A-line flowy skirt is a go-to for vacationing with a bump. For starters, they’re having a major moment right now. You can pair them with the matching tie-front vest, or switch things up with a bikini top like I did for a beach day. Made from 100% cotton, the Free People version is super breathable. The elastic waistband grows with you, and you can wear it high over the bump or low on the hips—whatever feels best that day. I’m especially into the eyelet detailing, which adds a soft, boho charm I’ve been loving lately. I finished the look with a straw tote to carry all the beach essentials.

4. Loose Knits

This ribbed knit set checks all the boxes for maternity wear—soft, stretchy, and still super cute. I paired it with a bikini and wore it on a boat, which honestly felt like peak vacation energy. Made from a dreamy cotton, it’s gentle on the skin (a must when your body’s changing), and the fabric is forgiving. The elastic waistband on the skirt is comfy and adapts as the bump grows. The open-front top—clearly a favorite silhouette of mine—adds that effortless, relaxed feel while still looking styled. I wore it with an easy thong sandal to keep the look monochromatic. Bonus: it comes in five colors, and I’m already tempted to grab another.

When searching for a maternity swimsuit for this trip, I knew I wanted a one-piece but I didn’t want it to look matronly. The plunging neckline and ultra-high-cut legs made me feel sexy, while still offering the coverage I wanted on a family trip. I fell in love with the print at first glance (there are over 10 options to choose from though), but it was the adjustable back tie that really sealed the deal. It gives me room to grow with my bump and bust, so I know I’ll be wearing this all summer long. I felt confident and completely myself—plus, I styled it with a lace sarong for that extra touch of texture.
