If there’s one thing we can count on from Laverne Cox, it’s a fashion spectacle. As the host of the 2025 Billboard Women in Music ceremony, she delivered not one, but two jaw-dropping archival looks—because why wear something new when you can wear history?
First up, a Dior Fall 2003 by John Galliano look that arrived just in time for me as the UK officially enters British Summer Time. Galliano’s trip to China heavily influenced this collection, and you can see it in the stunning red silk brocade print and the exaggerated 3D origami folds of the jacket. The vibrant print evoked traditional Chinese art, while the use of rich colours reflected the symbolic importance of these hues in Chinese culture—red for luck and celebration, gold for wealth and prosperity. It’s pure Galliano: theatrical, wildly bold, and imaginative.

As Laverne graced the stage in a breathtaking Alexander McQueen Fall 2010 ruby-red satin bullion dress from Lee McQueen’s final collection. This collection, just 16 pieces, was deeply personal, with the designer himself referring to it as Angels and Demons in tweets just weeks before his passing.
McQueen had a unique ability to balance opulence with restraint, and this gown is a perfect example. The mix of novelty embroidered metallic bullion with luxurious red satin gives it a regal quality, yet there’s an effortless, almost untouchable element about it. A true slice of fashion history—and one incredibly gorgeous garment.
Interestingly, this dress never had a proper red carpet moment—but it did get a legendary pop culture moment when Beyonce wore it in her Run the World music video. And just like in the lookbook and on Beyonce, Laverne styled hers with over-the-knee leather boots—a styling choice that amplifies the look’s edge and power.
But the real game-changer? The black mullet hairstyle. It works perfectly here, adding a raw, slightly punk-ish energy that the dress needed. It’s an unexpected twist, considering Laverne love for blonde hair, but it gives the whole look a modern, editorial edge—a fitting tribute to McQueen’s rebellious spirit.
Once again, Laverne understands the assignment—and delivered.
I think by the time we close out 2025, Laverne will probably hold the record for the most archival fashion moments of the year.
