Alessandro Michele dressed six celebrities in Valentino for the 2025 Oscars, where he continued to infuse his whimsical, romantic, and slightly offbeat touch into the red carpet. Some looks hit the mark, while others left me wishing for a sharper execution.
Just OK
Colman Domingo himself is the prize here. The custom Valentino red tailored jacket belted with tassels and paired with contrasting black trousers stands out for the colour alone. But as striking as red is, I’m not as excited about this as I wanted to be. When lined up against his past awards season looks—which were razor-sharp—or even his previous Oscars moments, this was just OK for me. Valentino Garavani accessories completed his look. I’m just not buying this union.

The Valentino scarf As a tie, is a thing
Omar Apollo brought his usual flair with a Valentino polka dot shirt and silk pois-de-soie scarf bandeau presenting itself as a tie. The real showstopper? Cornrows paired with a veiled headpiece. Not many men could pull that off, but he nails it. Michele’s signature playfulness feels right at home with Omar’s gender-fluid approach to style.

Quintessential Alessandro Michele
Charlotte Lawrence had a fairytale moment in this Valentino Spring 2025 organza rose and gold gown. The floral embroidery and satin bow detail at the waist are quintessential Alessandro Michele flourishes, creating a look that is whimsical, romantic, and true to his aesthetic. However, the most random addition? A Valentino Garavani cat bag. It’s giving quirky and suits her playful personality.

A Fresh Alessandro Michele Perspective
Alba Rohrwacher debuted a piece from Valentino’s Vertigineux collection—Michele’s haute couture debut for the house. Considering Charlotte’s dress was oozing with Michele’s predictable romanticism, this black velvet gown with taffeta ruffles and ivory organdy cuffs offered a fresh perspective. That said, I can’t help but wish someone with a more gothic persuasion—Rooney Mara, perhaps—had worn this. It needed someone with a moodier presence to really sell the drama. Do you agree?

Valentino Double Date
Brandi Carlile’s custom Valentino suit was a playful nod to the Spring 2025 collection, with polka dots and a red satin bow providing a sense of fun that matched her personality. Her partner, Catherine Shepherd, wore a Valentino black and beige wool dress with velvet bows. While understated, it didn’t quite feel awards-ceremony-ready—even for a plus-one.
