Country darling Lainey Wilson put an interesting spin on western wear this week, stepping out in Manchester, England in an oversized fringe jacket and a hat that’s more trucker than ten-gallon.
Wilson has a signature style that’s become something of a uniform these days: bell bottoms + cowboy hat + fringe that ripples when she moves. Crazy it took this long for her to do a collection with Wrangler! But she broke all of her style rules on a recent walk. Instead of patterned flares, the “Heart Like a Truck” singer stepped out in olive green sweats gathered by elastic at the bottom, and paired them not with boots but bright white sneakers. Keeping her color palette simple, she accessorized with an olive-and-black snakeskin fanny pack worn cross-body, and an olive trucker hat with metal embellishments. If she weren’t rocking braids, we might not have recognized her!

The fringed jacket is a bit more Lainey Wilson-coded, but it’s actually far from her usual look. Typically, Wilson rocks fringe that moves when she does, attached to her sleeves. See: exhibit A, exhibit B, exhibit C. But this coat has stiff leather fringe on the pockets and lapels. More bad-ass than free spirit. A small but significant step in the Wilson style evolution.
When talking to Glamour last year, Wilson explained how her signature look came to be. “You can’t just be a decent singer-songwriter,” she said. “You’ve got to do something that makes you stand out and stand apart. And for me, I was thinking, What could I do that is still true to me, but is stepping outside the box a little bit? I decided, All right, if I’m going down to Music Grove, if I’m going to the grocery store, if I’m going back home to Baskin [Louisiana], I’m wearing my bell-bottoms because I’m going to get noticed.”
The just-engaged musician will be back stateside soon to perform at the Grand Ole Opry 100th anniversary celebration, so be sure to tune in to NBC if you’re a fan.
