Lupita Nyong’o joined Ariana DeBose on the red carpet for the opening night of Buena Vista Social Club at The Schoenfeld Theatre on Wednesday, and I can confidently say—we’re back in business.
Since signing on as a Chanel ambassador, Lupita’s red carpet looks have leaned heavily into the house’s signature black-and-white aesthetic. We knew this might happen. We feared it might happen. And yet, we held onto hope that one of the most vibrant dressers in Hollywood wouldn’t abandon colour entirely.
Well, our patience has been rewarded. Lupita stepped out in a Jonathan Cohen Spring 2025 strapless mini dress in the most stunning lapis blue, adorned with a vivid floral print that immediately took us back to the fashion moments that made us fall in love with her style in the first place.
The matching shoes? Perfect. The red floral ring? Inspired. The overall impact? Pure joy.
And yet, as much as this look makes me want to celebrate, there’s also a twinge of sadness. Is this just a fleeting moment? A rare break from the Chanel-mandated grayscale? I sincerely hope not. Let’s not make this like Christmas, where we get one colourful Lupita moment a year. I, for one, am manifesting more of this energy in 2025.
