Monica Barbaro had one of the strongest press tours of the season for A Complete Unknown, delivering look after look that felt effortlessly chic and/or fashion-forward. So, you can imagine my heartbreak when she stepped onto the Oscars red carpet in this Dior gown.
It’s not that the design is bad—it’s actually quite a classic silhouette for the house—but the execution? A complete letdown. The fabric didn’t hold up, and the structure just wasn’t there. For a night as big as this, she deserved a gown that worked as hard as she did all season.
This was a bit of a travesty. Monica had been making such waves, and this moment should have been the grand finale. Instead, it fell flat.
At the very least, Bvlgari High Jewelry provided a little sparkle, but my heart still aches for her. She deserved a winning red carpet moment, and sadly, this wasn’t it.
