After a whirlwind micro press tour in New York earlier this week—where Sofia Carson delivered two effortlessly chic looks—she made her grand return to the red carpet for the The Life List premiere at The Plaza Hotel.
If you’re anything like me, you were bracing yourself for yet another Elie Saab gown. We’ve seen it a million times before, and at this point, they’re all blurring into one. But thankfully, Sofia threw us a curveball by opting for a Stéphane Rolland Fall 2024 Haute Couture velvet gown, which, at first glance, looks like two separate pieces.

Credit where credit is due: Stéphane Rolland, a true master couturier, made sure the illusion panel at the back is completely seamless, with a dazzling diamond detail ensuring no unsightly zippers disrupt the magic. It’s an exquisite display of craftsmanship, proving that haute couture is all about the smallest—and most impactful—details.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking: isn’t this look a bit too heavy for this time of year? Between the high neckline, the matching velvet gloves, and the general fall/winter mood of the fabric, it does feel slightly at odds with the current spring season. And considering Sofia is known for her love of dreamy, romantic hues, this is a definite departure. But here’s why I love it—her style is evolving.
Gone are the days of the pink puffy Giambattista Valli tulle gowns that once defined her red carpet presence (which I loved by the way). This is more refined, and undeniably dramatic in the best way possible. It’s a bold shift, but one that signals a newfound confidence in her fashion choices.
Chopard jewels added the final touch to this elevated moment. Was it unexpected? Absolutely. But was it also a refreshing change of pace? Without a doubt.
