Kate Hudson Channels ’70s Studio 54 Glam at the 2025 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony

At this year’s Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, Kate Hudson served up retro radiance in the chicest way possible, stepping out in a shimmering Elie Saab gown that whispered ‘70s goddess’ in all the best ways. And let’s be honest: when you lean into that Studio 54 energy, the hair has to deliver. Enter celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis, who transformed Kate into a modern-day screen siren.

“To complement Kate’s gown and its ‘70s glamour, I styled her hair in a polished, off-the-shoulder look with fullness, body, and shine—evoking those Studio 54 movie star vibes,” Marcus shared.

And the final result? A look that danced between disco and Old Hollywood, with voluminous waves, lifted roots, and a glossy finish that gave us the kind of hair dreams are made of.

The Breakdown:

Marcus began with Joico’s Dream Blowout Thermal Protection Crème, applying it to damp hair from mid-lengths to ends for heat defense and smoothness. Then came Joico Power Whip Whipped Foam, applied root to tip for all-over body.

Using a small round brush, he blew out Kate’s hair in sections, lifting off the scalp and pinning each section to set. To lock in that lift, he gave each pinned section a spritz of Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray. After 20 minutes of setting, he released the curls and brushed them out for a soft, voluminous texture—more body than bounce.

To sculpt the face-framing silhouette, he teased the top and sides, shaped the front, and sealed the look with Joico Power Spray. As a final step, a touch of Zero Heat Air-Dry Styling Crème on the ends gave that polished, frizz-free finish.

Studio 54, but make it 2025.
