After delivering a breathtaking red carpet moment at the LA premiere of G20, Viola Davis touched down in London for the film’s photocall at Trafalgar Square. Expectations were high, but unfortunately, this is one of those times where I have to rip the bandaid off quickly—I didn’t love this look.
The Stella McCartney Spring 2025 two-piece—featuring a halterneck top and slouchy trousers—had all the right ingredients for a sleek, powerful fashion moment. On the runway, it was fluid, modern, and effortlessly cool. And I absolutely admire the intention here. Viola’s G20 character is a fearless action heroine, so stepping outside her usual red carpet comfort zone for something a little edgier made perfect sense. But execution? That’s where things fell short.
The neckline’s drapery, which brought so much intrigue to the top, completely lost its impact in the way it was styled. We’ve all had those moments when a garment just doesn’t sit right, and unfortunately, this was one of them. Then there’s the issue of the trousers tucked into boots—an eternally tricky styling choice that rarely delivers the intended effect, making it a tough sell for me every time.
And finally, the fabric. On the runway, it looked like sequins; on Viola, it had an almost plastic-like sheen. A quick check on the Stella McCartney website confirmed it’s actually panelled velvet, which only adds to the complexity of why this didn’t quite work.
I’m not saying this needed to be a carbon copy of the runway, but the styling choices didn’t do Viola any favours.
A+ for the bold idea. C- for the final result.
