Armani’s SS23 collection puts opulence first.

When talking about the outlook and vision of a collection, it’s helpful to think about it in terms of cohesion. What makes this collection one, a unique entity in itself? Giorgio Armani takes out the legwork in answering that question, providing his cohesive vision upfront: gold, gold, nothing but gold. For his Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Armani threads his collection with gold undercurrents, creating a luxurious and opulent vision. The results are oh so rich.

If you were imagining some lacquered gold dresses, screaming in their wealth, you’d be wrong. No, Armani subtly inserts this vision of opulence, whether it be a simple gold lining or a golden shimmer in a sheer fabric. The looks are understated in a way that can feel even more glamorous, for they’re not trying too hard.

Additionally, the garments themselves are often more muted than bold, with long, liquid structures. Whether it be duster coats or weightless skirts, the collection’s look is generally light and airy. Plus, models are all shown in flats. It’s the simplicity of the collection, these clean garments with pure visions, that bring forward the gold accents.

In one of the collection’s most eye-catching looks, the model is seen sporting a royal purple bra and long skirt. Over top is a lace tank, giving the look a feel of weightlessness. And, shining through that ankle-length sheer skirt, those flecks of gold stand out. This is the power of Armani’s limited, skillful play with gold; what could be seen as a gauche glittery garment becomes classic and elevated.

With this collection, Giorgio Armani continues in his mission of making wearable clothes for the elegant woman. The luxury doesn’t shine so bright that it drowns out any personality, for the models themselves feel distinctive and free-spoken. But, as with any good Armani collection, the garments still hold that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that feels so noble, so righteous. They’re perfect for the modern woman of luxury.
