For the first outing of the tour on March 20, Kate Middleton and Prince William stuck with the blue theme, which represents the Belize flag. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opted for more casual looks for a tour of the Che’il Mayan Cacao Farm and Chocolate Factory in Maya Center Village. Prince William dressed in a light button-down shirt and navy trousers, while Middleton wore a blue floral mid-length smock dress by Tory Burch, statement earrings, and a straw clutch.
During their visit, Middleton attempted to grind cacao beans after a live demonstration by the tour guide. “You make it look so easy,” she said.
Though the royal couple was all smiles in photos, the trip has not been completely smooth. According to People, the duke and duchess were originally scheduled to tour a different cacao farm, but the trip was canceled over “sensitivity issues.” Ahead of the royal visit, villagers protested colonialism as well the use of their land for the royals’ helicopter.
“For us, it really hits home because of the treatment,” village youth leader Dionisio Shol told the Daily Mail, per People. “The organizer said we had to let them use the football field and that people were coming to our village and it had to look good. Giving community leaders commands did not sit well with the community.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton will continue their tour with stops in the Bahamas and Jamaica.
