Angela Bassett just made history at the 2023 Golden Globes.
Dressed in a sparkling halter gown with her hair styled in a glamourous bob, Bassett looked every bit a queen as she accepted the Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a motion picture for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This marks the first time a performer has won an individual acting award for a role in a Marvel film, as well as the first time a Marvel role earned its star a Golden Globes nomination at all.
“Weeping—weeping may come in the evening but joy comes in the morning,” Bassett said in her acceptance speech, in honor of her late Black Panther costar Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer in 2020. “We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed, and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman. And we have joy in knowing, with this historic Black Panther series, [that it] is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to. We showed the world what Black unity, leadership, and love looks like beyond, behind, and in front of the camera.”
This is Angela Bassett’s second Golden Globe since taking home the award for best actress in a musical or comedy for her role in the 1993 Tina Turner biopic, What’s Love Got to Do With It. The Glamour Woman of the Year honoree continued, “And to the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. We just made history with this nomination and with this award. It belongs to all of you, all of us. Thank you.”
