Sensible experimentation is a contradiction only when its results are less than practical. Is it possible for childlike graphics to decorate ensembles of a pragmatic, contemporary dresser? In theory, maybe not. To Jonathan Anderson? Absolutely. This season, the renowned designer has partnered with Moncler for a collection rooted in play, sitting at the intersection of function and youth culture.
Appropriately titled Clash Play, the collection features neutral base-wear as a canvas for vibrant appliqué, from pink embroidered teddy bears to graphic, cartoon-like flowers. Sleek Nappa leather puffers meet their match in leopard printed zip-up fleeces, with multicolored cardigans layered under silhouettes of oversized blousons. There is similar variation in texture, from the sheen of waxed linen to dry, technical cotton, an air of grunge in their earthy tones bringing looks back to their place in reality. As always, a genderless essence adds relatability to the melodrama—a presentation of both tailored intention and limitless imagination. Below, Ka’amed, MJ Herrera, Alaska Riley, Keizo Fish, and Morgan Rennie model the collection, available in stores on February 9th.
