Grab your Bumpits and your vinyl copy of Born to Die, because we’re heading back to 2012 with Lana Del Rey. The musician brought back her signature retro beehive updo at the 2023 Billboard Women in Music Awards, and I’m ready to cue up “Video Games” once more.
Del Rey, who was honored with the Visionary Award at the awards ceremony, hit the red carpet in classic LDR fashion in a high-neck sheer paisley dress that looked like it stepped right out of the late ’60s and equally vintage-inspired gold mules. Instead of wearing her hair long and loose, as she often does these days, Del Rey went back to her roots and pulled half of her dark brunette hair back with plenty of volume at the crown for a Priscilla Presley–inspired updo. The rest of her hair fell over one shoulder in undone waves and let the ribbons of deep auburn highlights peek out. The updo wasn’t hairsprayed into stone like the beehives of yore; instead it was sleek and a little loose, which kept it feeling modern and not costumey, similar to the way she used to wear her hair in the early days of her career.
The musician kept the vintage vibes going with her makeup by sticking to a neutral eye shadow and her beloved cat-eye liner in a long swoop past the tip of her brow, plus a strip of false lashes for more retro glamour. Del Rey’s lipstick was more ’90s than ’60s; she skipped the frosty pinks and matte nudes in favor of a light brown with just a hint of gloss and piled on a pretty peach blush for extra color on her cheeks.
Lana Del Rey’s latest album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, is set to drop on March 24, and in initial imagery, it does seem like she’s revisiting the ’60s bad-girl aesthetic of her past. (Peep her Interview shoot for more.) If you don’t already have one, now’s the time to run out and grab a teasing comb, a can of hairspray, and some baby blue eye shadow so you’re ready for the return of Retro Lana.
