This year’s Met Gala theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty” turned the red carpet into a tribute to honor the life and legacy of the late designer. Some went the literal route, from Jessica Chastain’s Karl cosplay to Jared Leto in a cat costume as Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat Choupette. Others opted for something more subtle, wearing looks from Chanel’s latest collections or archival pieces from Lagerfeld’s tenure as creative director..
Chanel ambassador and Gossip Girl actor Whitney Peak went with the latter, wearing a Chanel couture white organza gown from the Haute Couture Fall-Winter 2021/22 collection and a Chanel beauty look to reflect the key pillars of Lagerfeld’s creations. For Peak’s makeup, celebrity makeup artist Tyron Machhausen paid homage to Lagerfeld by looking to her intricate gown for inspiration.
“When I saw a picture of Whitney in this breathtaking couture dress, it felt very old Hollywood, but the stunning beading and detail work reminded me of a delicate sea anemone—a gorgeous sea flower,” Machhausen tells Glamour. “I wanted the makeup to reflect that—glowy, lit from within skin with sculpted strong features and little soft elements reflecting the pearlescent, dreamy underwater quality of the dress. A look that is effortless yet strong and modern. Qualities that I always admired in Karl Lagerfeld.”
To prep the skin, Machhausen used the No. 1 de Chanel Revitalizing Serum and Rich Revitalizing Cream and the Hydra Beauty Essence Mist, before a creating a luminous base with Chanel Les Beiges Sheer Healthy Glow Highlighting Fluid in Sunkissed and Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation Hydration and Longwear. “I love mixing a couple of drops of the with the foundation for an incredible lit-from-within glow,” he says.
Machhausen used the Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream in Soleil Tan Deep Bronze to add definition and color, then topped things off with the Poudre Lumière Highlighting Powder in White Opal to reflect the pearlescent and dreamy look of Peak’s dress.
