In lieu of so many of our favourites (Zendaya, Sarah Jessica Parker, Blake Lively) the spotlight fell on Rihanna to give us that magic Met Gala moment that we are likely to be talking about for years to come.
And she didn’t disappoint wearing a custom Valentino Haute Couture gown especially designed for her by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli.
The magic was really imbued by the cape which was accented with 30 camellias composed of 500 petals.
This was a beautiful homage to Karl Lagerfeld as the camellia flower has been a signature for the fashion house since Gabrielle Chanel pinned one to her belt in 1913 and decided to make it the label’s symbol.
Karl Lagerfeld made it a recurring theme in his designs too.
I was less enthused about the look once the cape was removed, but the accessories including the eyelash shades, ensured that Rihanna’s look was one of the best looks of the night.
Pierpaolo Piccioli totally understood the assignment when it came to this look. I wish others had presented this level of creativity.
A Bulgari High Jewelry necklace in platinum with Akoya cultured pearls and pear diamonds completed her look.
A$AP Rocky’s homage to Karl Lagerfeld was felt via his skinny leather tie.
The rest of his custom Gucci look featured a tartan skirt with a long train styled over embroidered denim jeans.
A selection of belts and Gucci Eyewear provide the finishing touches.
On theme and on brand. A great combination.
