Prince William and Kate Middleton plan to modernize the Coronation ceremony, whenever that happens for the future king.
Since his father King Charles III’s Coronation on May 6, the Prince of Wales has reportedly reflected on what his future coronation will look like, per a source who spoke to The Sunday Times. And that future coronation will be way more modern than Charles’s, which Prince William himself helped plan. William, and his wife, Kate Middleton, want to make the next coronation more relevant to modern Britain, per the report.
King Charles III’s Coronation respected royal tradition with an elaborate ceremony at Westminster Abbey and an “homage of the people,” a controversial element in which the people are invited to swear their allegiance to the new king. It’s very…well, 16th century.
The source told the Times that the Prince of Wales is “is mindful of the fact that in 20 years’ time, or whenever his time comes, how can the coronation be modern but also unifying to the nation and the Commonwealth? I think his coronation will look and feel quite different,” they said.
Per People, William is always looking for ways to modernize the monarchy. A spokesperson told the outlet that “the Prince and Princess are keen to do things in their own way.” Prince William and Kate Middleton have already started doing things their own way following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. They’ve started to show small public displays of affection at public events, including the butt pat at the BAFTAs, and Kate is wearing bolder colors, including the red nail polish she wore on Easter Sunday, which violated the unofficial royal protocol, which states that royals must wear clear or flesh-toned polish only. Middleton’s decision to wear a flower crown rather than a tiara at her father-in-law’s Coronation was also symbolic of the Wales’s understanding of the image of the monarchy.
