Sounds tentatively positive… What’s more, according to Time, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is apparently very enthusiastic about the potential for “more Barbie movies.”
Back in November 2022, the film’s director Greta Gerwig also told Variety that it would be “exciting” to see more Barbie movies in the future. When asked if the film was the beginning of a planned multi-film franchise she responded, “I can’t answer all these questions!” with a laugh, before adding, “I mean, it would certainly be exciting if it was.”
Iiiinteresting. Given the hype that this film has seen already, we remain hopeful. But even if a sequel were to happen, expect a wait: Any plans would likely be put on hold until after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are resolved.
What would Barbie 2 be about?
As stated above, Margot Robbie has explained that the story could go in “a million” different directions. What we do know about the first film is that it sees its title character venture out of Barbie Land for the first time ever as she’s forced to reckon with challenges of the real world.
We’ll have to wait and see for ourselves where Barbie ends up at the conclusion of the first film, but rumors are circulating on the internet that a spin-off centered on Ken’s character might make sense.
Equally, a potential Barbie 2 could easily follow a similar structure to the first film and see her dropped in an entirely new universe. At this stage, everything’s pure speculation—but we can hope.
Though nothing is confirmed, when asked what a sequel would look like in an interview with ET, Ryan Gosling responded, “I don’t know, you’d have to ask Greta that. I would work with Greta and Margot on anything”.
