Sometimes, such as when working out or walking the dog, basics are best. So says Dakota Johnson, so say we all.
The actor was spotted walking her new dog in Malibu on August 11, wearing head-to-toe basic black workout gear to match her very non-basic black pooch. She wore a V-neck sports bra with matching biking shorts, a black Mets cap, black sunglasses, and white-and-black dad sneakers with crew socks. Who knew workout basics could look so chic? Dakota Johnson, apparently.

We would be remiss not to note that while Johnson was wearing some jewelry for the dog walk, she appeared to be missing her large emerald engagement ring. Johnson has reportedly been engaged to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for a couple of years, but lately they’ve been dogged by rumors that the relationship is on the rocks. In June, a source told People that they’d had their “ups and downs” but were now definitively “back on.” Which was confusing because nobody knew they were ever not on.
So, perhaps the engagement is off. Or perhaps Johnson simply took off her ring while working out in case her fingers swelled up in the heat. But whether you choose to read into Dakota Johnson’s lack of engagement ring or not, can we at least all agree that workout norm-core very much is “back on?”
