Do you remember when amfAR galas were the highlight of a festival, style-wise?
amfAR Cannes lost its sparkle about four years ago, and it seems amfAR Venezia is facing a similar fate. While the event successfully raised over $2.5 million for charitable causes, the red carpet looks left much to be desired.
A Baffling Choice
Eva Longoria, once a festival fashion icon, seems to have hit a roadblock at amfAR Venezia. Known for saving her best style moments for Europe, Eva’s choice of an Alberta Ferretti Fall 2024 high-neck sheer silk chiffon gown left me scratching my head. The silver paillettes and high neck didn’t do her any favours, especially for someone of her petite stature. It’s hard to imagine how anyone thought this gown was a good idea for Eva—it felt overwhelming.
The only saving grace? Her Bulgari jewels, which brought a much-needed touch of elegance to an otherwise confusing look. Eva has had so many high points on the red carpet, but unfortunately, this wasn’t one of them.
Overcooked and Overstyled
Kate Beckinsale is known for her love of dramatic, over-the-top fashion, but this peach Sabina Bilenko Fall 2024 Couture strapless jumpsuit with a chiffon train, feather-accented bodice, and silver corset took it a step too far. Everything about this look screamed “too much.” The sky-high platforms defied logic, and while I usually defend Kate’s love of bold, daring fashion, this ensemble crossed the line into caricature.
The corset, the shoes, the front opening—none of it worked for me. Even Mae Cassidy’s Simi Pearl bag and Pomellato jewels couldn’t save this look. Sometimes less really is more, and Kate would have benefited from dialling it back here, but we all know that isn’t her M.O.
Almost There
Kelly Rowland came close to nailing her Cheney Chan Fall 2024 Couture look, but unfortunately, the platform shoes ruined what could have been the standout look of the night. The sculptural, strapless dress had the potential to be a red carpet win, but those heavy, clunky shoes were a distraction from the dress’s sculptural elegance.
If Diana Ross were to perform in the runway version—complete with a feathered cape—I’d be excited to see this again.
Beautiful, But Not Perfect
Rumer Willis delivered a beautiful moment in her Georges Chakra Fall 2024 Couture gown. The chocolate silk, paired with draped chiffon sleeves brought a romantic element to the look, while the rich, earthy tone was flattering.
However, the top layer of satin adds a layer of complexity where simplicity would have been more powerful.
It is so sad to see amfAR gala’s sartorial magic continue to fade. Here’s hoping the fashion at future galas recaptures that lost glamour.
